Instead of trying to convert world to WO, Apple is doing the opposite
- bringing the world to Mac OS X by bundling every single development
tool known to man with the OS.
While this is convenient for "converting" developers, it makes the OS
incredibly complex as well.
Just think about Carbon / Cocoa / Java. Three full fledged Environments
which should make almost 90 % of an OS, each. A bill with 170 % waste(d
resources)!?
Much more I'd like to see one preferrred development environment and a
bunch of compatibility libraries for the others. Plus, a migration path
to allow source migration and sort of partial ports to OS X.
And at a very little cost for that matter, as most of the integrated
tools are open source.
Add-on systems like Fink, DarwinPorts and SGI Freeware are yet cheaper
and none the less more powerful.
... but it is hard to argue with such business strategy
Obviously, the Core parts (Core Foundation, Core Video, Code Data ...)
are part of the strategy as well. One could imagine this is the
preferred environment I spoke about above, making Carbon, Cocoa etc. a
compatibility shim on top of Core Foundation, making EOF a
compatibility shim on top of Core Data ... ?
Cheers,
Markus
