You might like to check that the pbs.exe & WindowServer.exe show up in
your Startup items in the Start Menu, and that the nmserver (Apple
Netname Server) and machd (Apple Mach Daemon) services are running
(marked as Automatic Services).
Nice to hear someone else is using XP because they have to. :)
