The 'unsupported' nature does not worry me at all. Its Java, pure
and simple.
How many people are still buying Solaris boxes to deploy WO? It
seems to me that the most likely non-Apple deployment scenario is
Linux. We all know just how easy it is to deploy to Linux under
Tomcat or JBoss...and Apple clearly said that they are certainly not
going to break that.
I got the impression that the license key issue might just disappear
in future.

Yes, I agree. This does indicate very clearly that Apple intends
to move WO forward and is putting some resources behind it.
The legal response was very clear today from Apple:
WO 5.3 is only SUPPORTED on MacOS X 10.4.
Nothing has been done to stop it running on anything else.
Indeed, the licenses now no longer check for platform specifics.
There are two things that make me nervous here. One is that unless
they state that they won't do otherwise, Apple can make the license
platform specific in the future. Second, while technically
feasible, deploying on unsupported platforms is a hard sell to
customers.
Development is free but only on MacOS X.
And the OS X only part should not come as a surprise. Apple has
clearly been moving in that direction.
Deployment requires a license. The only way to buy a license is
a) to get it free with Xserve or b) to buy MacOS X Server - US$499
for 10 client (no impact on WO so why pay $999 for unlimited?)
So it is all excellent. US$100 price cut for deployment if you
are not on Mac hardware and free dev seats.
And for those using xServes, it is fully free. Not quite open
source, but the next best thing - freeware closed source.
What is there not to like about that? Also, WOBuilder does a nice
job now too...and, of course, requires MacOS X.
There is lots to like here. WO is free on the most cost effective
platform. The aging tools have been updated. WO has been brought
into xCode and is being moved forward. Even if I am not overly
fond of xCode for Java, this is a very positive move for
WebObjects. If some of the more vexing bugs in xCode 1.x have been
eliminated I might even start to grudgingly tolerate it ;-) Still,
I find the deployment scenario troubling. It is not that I really
want to deploy on anything other than an xServe. Far from it -
xServes have been great for us. But having a cross platform Java
web based solution that is supported only on one platform is going
to make it a harder sell. You have vendor lock-in in on the
software libraries and the hardware. For a lot of shops, that is
going to be a big, red flag.

Which reminds me, just an hour ago I saw a boxed copy of 5.2 for
sale at the
San Francisco retail store!
P.S. I hope everyone appreciates the major point of 5.3: it's now
a part of
the mainstream developer tools, and from now on will get the
attention and
visibility it deserves. WebObjects is no longer a second-class
neglected
technology. I think that's outstanding news!
