Otherwise, any pointers to example plugins etc would be great as I can't use straight jdbc for this area of my application.

I'm not certain that straight JDBC would help you. IIRC, you don't +require+ a plugin either -- though that would certainly solve the problem. Have you looked at changing the data type and/or not using UPPER?
