Despite your very welcome efforts I'm sorry to say this is still not clear to me. You wrote

If you're going to develop on OS X (WebObjects Developer) and deploy on

irrelevant.

but I don't know whether this means I don't need a license to deploy on non-Apple hardware, or that a license won't be any use on non-Apple hardware. Is it irrelevant because it doesn't work?

It is irrelevant because they are two separate, independent licences. i.e., You no longer need both. As of 5.3.1 the development licence is non-restrictive in that the same licence can be used for development and deployment. Cliff even posted a HOWTO on the list to use the licence. His job wouldn't last too long if he was biting the hand that fed him would it? Go to it...

Many helpful and informed WO developers have contributed to this discussion in the past, but as far as I can tell they each contradict the preceding poster and the result remains inconclusive.

Apple employees, and so on, have announced on various occations that it is now free to both develop (WO 5.3, OS X officially supported only i.e., with tools) and also deploy (WO 5.3.1, anywhere). Just read that last sentence over again. No more $50k licences, no more $699 licences, but ... free from WO5.3.x.

Is it possible to put a true/false response to the following statements?

"If I buy OS X 10.4+ I will get a licensed copy of WebObjects developer for no extra charge. "

Short answer: See description under "Buy Now" http://www.apple.com/ webobjects/

Generally, it depends on how old the DVD is that comes with your machine. But by becoming a "free" ADC member you are "free" to download the latest developer tools that comes with a licensed copy of the WebObjects Developer Tools for no extra charge ( other than the time, MBs to download, and an extra mouse click during install :-)

This has been available for some time now. I'm using such a copy. So the answer is "true".

"If I buy OS X Server 10.4+ I get a WebObjects deployment license for no extra charge."

More info: http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/specs.html
Note: techspecs mention 5.2 licence. Check with sales rep. That's possibly old web info (not unusual for WebObjects docos).

This has been available for some time now. Various people are using such a copy. So the answer is "true".

"If I deploy my WebObjects app on non-Apple hardware I do not need to get a license from Apple"

Not quite worded correctly. Better said thusly, "If I deploy my WebObjects app on non-Apple hardware the licence supplied with WebObjects is sufficient."

The answer, as has been said, is "true".

or

"If I deploy my WebObjects app on non-Apple hardware I should still buy a copy of OS X Server in order to get a license that I will need use when deploying on the non-Apple hardware"

"completely false". See Cliffs response. If you have a WO5.3.1 Developer licence, off-road driving is at your discretion. Take all necessary precautions; you're on your own.

And one more that I'm not sure about.

"For versions of WebObjects > 5.2 there are no WO deployment libraries for non-Apple hardware. If I want to use WO 5.3.1 and deploy on Linux I have to abandon wotaskd and use J2EE

If you want to deploy on non-Apple hardware (or more specifically: non-Mac OS X 10.4+ systems) then you're on your own porting wotaskd to another system.

HTH
