Makes perfect sense to me. I can see how the overlay planes would have much
higher value in other areas of human/computer interaction than my own.

I agree completely.

I haven't looked at OpenDX in a long time. I didn't realize that it
*required* overlay planes!
Earlier you had mentioned that you were having problems with MapNotify and
other events types. Can you be more specific about that? Missing events
bothers me even more than lack of overlay planes. It signifies an error in
their code, not merely functionality they have yet to implement.

That's exactly what I was thinking about. Rather than having a private
conversation between you and me, I had been thinking that our discussion
should be happening on the x11-users list where others can read it as well.
If you like, I can "bounce" a copy of our previous conversation there so
others can make comments.
