Thank you to Daniel, Dominic and Gareth for some helpful information
for newcomers. I have been lurking here for a week or so, hoping to
learn and understand more. Marie's note has given me courage to ask
for recommendations to learn how to use x11 from the ground up. Can
anyone recommend an "x11 for Dummies" book?!
I've been lurking for a while and I'll take a stab at your question.
I'm sure the veterans here will
point out any errors I make. For background, I've been using Macs
for 10 years and Mac OS X for
6 months. I used UNIX extensively for 7 years, but have been away
from it for 4, up until we got
Mac OS X. I am not a developper and barely know C ; those pointers
get me every time :~(
As I see it, if you are not developping X11 apps, you don't have to
worry much about X11
(once you get it installed, that is). You will be more concerned
with understanding UNIX
(or LINUX) and the window manager. It is the window manager that
gives you the look & feel
of your windows and allows you to customize that. Apple's window
manager is quartz-wm. It
is more closely integrated with Mac OS X than others, but everyone
has their favorite.
Once you have X11 installed and have selected a window manager, you
can install X11 apps.
Open Office will run on your Mac -- it will have your window
manager's look & feel rather than
an Aqua look & feel. It will take unitl 2006 to get the latter.
I've found "fink" to be a good way to
install X11 apps on the Mac.
I've found the following useful in setting up the LINUX side of my Mac:
the Fink User's Guide http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/users-guide/uguide.html
"Running X11 on Darwin and Mac OS X"
http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/x11.html
"Mac OS X for UNIX Geeks", by Brian Jephson & Ernest Rothman, Publ by
O'Reilly. This
assumes you have a basic knowledge of some flavor of UNIX.
For learning to harness the power of UNIX, I liked
"UNIX Power Tools" by Jerry Peek, Tim O'Reilly, and Mike Loukides,
also Publ by O'Reilly
This is in its third edition now.
For learning how to customize a window manager, I learned by example,
by poking around on
my system, and by experimenting.
Carol (not French, but I have a cousin in France)
