I believe you are judging reasonably - if you like I can send you an
xprop output of my "traditional workstation", which is a well known model.
I don't believe just one overlay visual would be enough. Of course
pseudo- color stuff can be very helpful... Overlay support for
Motif-based glwMDrawingAreaWidgetClass as well...
Keep in touch!

This was the trivial case, just for illustration. What about floating
coordinate systems, superimposed odjects, meteorological
visualization, not to mention the rest... I don't believe that tens
of millions of code lines would be re-written, just to comply with
Gtk+ or Qt. I can tell you that part of academic community is pretty
concerned about Apple's "never-mind" about overlay visuals...
that really isn't our position. We don't have unlimited resources and
have been focusing on the things that we know people want. Now that we
know that people want overlay support I'm fairly sure we'll try to
implement them (I can't promise when that will be though)
In fact we have been discussing possible implementation strategies
recently. It would help me a lot if I know exactly what you want (and
what you think other people would want as well)
If we implemented a single overlay visual as 8bpp pseudo color, do you
think that would be sufficient? There are reasons why rgb overlays are
less attractive.. and I believe indexed overlays are what a lot of
"traditional" workstations provide..?
Nice that you consider this a bug! I'm just doing it! I wouldn't have
known about this valuable address, if ther wasn't you.
bugs, features, it's all the same :-)
