What does x11 do? Does it allow you to use Windows applications on OS

X11 is a way to run graphical programs in a Unix environment. Without
it, Unix would be completely command-line, like old MS-DOS systems.
There are many programs written for X (that would be X like X Windows,
not X like OS X) that we would like to run on Mac OS X, since it is
basically another Unix system even if it does have a pretty Mac face on
it. It has nothing to do with running Windows programs.
Many of the people on this list have had years of experience with X11
on other operating systems like Linux or FreeBSD or Solaris or any of a
number of others. Unix and X have been around a long time, and there
are a lot of applications out there.
