Do you ever get the same behavior if you don't use Terminal at all,
but open the X client from within X11?
I know you said in the beginning that it happens when starting up X
clients from within Terminal, but I'd appreciate hearing positively
that it only occurs *only* when starting up from within Terminal.

I quitted X11 and Terminal, repeated the process and a window

This is my .xinitrc file, if it helps.

When does quartz-wm not work? I suppose you are using something
other than just double-clicking X11.app?

Yes, I am using quartz-wm, which works most of the time. But

The window dressing comes from the window manager. You must have
a window manager running to get them.

Sometimes but not always, when I start an X application, say
xeyes, from with Terminal.app, I get a window without the

Is this a know problem and can it be fixed?
