First Apologies to Ettore for my bad edit on my last post where it
looks like I was addressing his problem and not Stephan's.
At present there are too many possibilities. So lets try to narrow
things down. The first thing to test is if X11 support is present in
the emacs you are running. So could you start it up and then do "C-x
a x-win <return>". Did an apropos buffer open with things like "x-
window-horizontal-drag-cursor" in it or did it say "No apropos
matches for `x-win'"?
That will tell us if you are using an X11 aware emacs, I still
suspect that this is the problem. Once we are past that we can look
into connection problems.

Yes, I did. To be sure, I recompiled emacs-devel, but it does not
help.
I can run xterm and even kde under X, but emacs does not open its own
window.
