Thanks to Brad - and the link on
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060316124704289&query=x11
which gives you a file that replaces Xquartz - the problem is solved.
The link on macoshints.com is a tar file containing the server and
following the instructions overwrites your Xserver on /usr/X11R6/bin/
Xquartz - I thing that it's prudent to back this up somewhere before
dumping a new version on it.
There is also a cautionary note at the bottom of this page about
speed. The available sources from Apple may not be
entirely current - it all seemed fine to me today.

Now I can live with a black pointer - but the yellow one is
relatively invisible.
Is there any hope for a fix or a workaround on this one? I'll
report it to Apple bugs but my success with getting bugs fixed
using that route is not good.
Peter,
This is a known bug with a work-around that can be found towards
the bottom of this lengthy discussion:

Apple is aware of the problem and the solution. Unfortunately they
were not able to reproduce the problem and have so far not rolled
the fix into the code base. Hopefully the fix will be in Leopard.
Best,
Brad
