It most likely doesn't implement Apple-WM. Could you please point
me to
some documentation that covers Apple-WM?
Sadly, /usr/X11/include/extensions/applewm.h and the implementation in
xserver is probably the best documentation for it.
Could you please shed some light on what changes to X11 lead to the
regression I experience with the current release (Ion works very well
with 2.1.4)? Am I stuck with the old version and miss out all the
other
improvements of later releases? Can this be fixed in later releases?
Chances are it has something to do with the various focus fixes for
Exposé, Spaces, and Dock.
Try installing 2.2.0.1 and then backing up the version of /usr/X11/bin/
Xquartz from 1.3.0-apple15 to 1.3.0-apple10 (what came with 2.1.4).
You can find those binaries in http://xquartz.macosforge.org/downloads
If you isolate the version change that causes the issue, check http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/log/?h=xorg-server-1.2-apple
to see what was changed between the two versions.

No, this is not possible. FFM is crucial for Ion's usability. What
is
missing to have proper FFM support in X11?
What is missing is proper FFM support in OS-X. X11 is doing the right
thing as far as its model is concerned... it's just very very
untrivial to make OSX and X11 live peacefully when they follow the
same window management practices... making them get along when they
don't complicates things more.
Once you isolate the version change that causes the issue, we'll
probably have a better understanding of the issue, and I might be able
to come up with a Peace Treaty ;)
Let me know when you have more info.
Thanks,
Jeremy
