well, it looks like I was also contributing to the bad behavior by
having an explicit:
export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
in my .bashrc.
I uncovered this issue by trying to start an xterm from my ordinary
iTerm window and being told that the display could not be opened.
I removed this statement and then after successfully starting an xterm
(which spun up X11) and trying nxclient again, no additional instance
of X11 appears in my dock. And Activity Monitor reports only one
instance each of quartz-wm, X11 and xinit.
So I seem to back to expected NoMachine behavior under Leopard.
Great -- thanks for all of the hard work over the past several weeks.

I suspect that the NoMachine folks need to update how their client
detects that the X Server is running.
Yes, this is most likely the case. It should be as simple as doing
this in their code:
if(! try to connect to X server)
start the x server
instead of
start the x server
In fact, they can look at the code for our X11.app to see how to do
that, since that is exactly what X11.app does:
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/xserver.git;a=blob;h=54d01368d1dee379356858dac838087decb9f5ad;hb=xorg-server-1.2-apple;f=hw/xquartz/bundle/bundle-main.c
I've heard about problems with nxclient in leopard before, but I
don't use it... So pass this on to the developers and invite them to
join us in the xquartz-dev mailing list if they need help.
