The X.org updates would be correct.
I *believe* (disclaimer: it's 4am, and I haven't verified this) the
problem is that the .la files ship with XCode (X11SDK.pkg, and
the .dylib files ship with OS updates (X11User.pkg)... and the
filename changed between 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 (which meant the .la file
would need to update)... but I need to check that.
The xquartz.macosforge.org update include everything in one package
and thus wouldn't be subject to this kind of problem.

If you want to fix anything in X11 on Leopard, please fix the
stupid typo in /usr/X11/lib/libXrandr.la that breaks gnu libtool-
based software that uses -lXrandr. (In case you forgot, the
libXrandr.la file shipped with 10.5.2 lists a library name that
does not exist in the X11 shipped with 10.5.2).
Jeremy has fixed a LOT of bugs in X11 and I'm sure this is on his
TODO list, assuming that a bug report has been filed.
Just to this point: I don't think Jeremy has to answer for this. It
is correct in the xquartz updates; it is only broken in the X11 that
ships with Mac OS X 10.5.2 (and hasn't been fixed in 10.5.3 nor in
10.5.4). Whoever fiddled with these library symlinks and the *.la
files in the shipping package didn't get them right for libXrandr.
