Sorry, my 4am choice of words was incorrect. s/antiquated/buggy/
And as for Leopard working with them... It DOES. Leopard *HAS* xmkmf/
imake. Additionally, SnowLeopard has a fixed autoconf! So your
second issue is very much satisfied.

your problem, but this position is ridiculous on its face. Apple

is not yet shipping 2.62 --- how can you expect that everyone has
already updated to that?
I think a *minimum* expectation is that Leopard X11 should work with
autoconf scripts generated by the autoconf version shipped in Leopard.
