I am a latecomer to Leopard, having just installed it yesterday on my

When I try to start X11, either by clicking X11 or starting an xterm
from a
Terminal window, it just hangs. I am downloading this package now
to see
if that fixes this problem.
What happens when you type 'echo $DISPLAY' in Terminal.app?
My main reason for posting though isn't that, but in reaction to the
section ``Deprecated Software''. I strongly think that it is a very
Bad
Idea(tm) to leave the imake and xmkmf out of the package as this
breaks
packages that require these to build. It's not as though this part
of X11
is huge or changes frequently.
There are a multitude of posts in the archives debating this point,
and I'm not going to reiterate beyond this:
imake and xmkmf are broken. Including them means that I would need to
support them and fix them. The fact that they "work" for you is,
well... lucky. Some packages "need" them to build. Those packages
should be updated to a new build system if they want to build on *ANY*
modern X11 system (this is not just for Xquartz)
Doing a quick check through the OpenPKG portable package management
system's packages, I find the following packages that use these, and
there
are some others like ``ddd'' that I didn't see with this check.
magicpoint slide show
tightvnc
x11-ssh-askpass
xfig Vector Drawing
transfig Vector Drawing (used by xfig)
viewfax fast tiff/f fax viewer
xaw3d
xpm
Of these, I use xfig/transfig and viewfax frequently.
And macports, fink, etc can build/install their own copies of imake/
xmkmf if they want to support them to build these packages... or the
distributers of those packages can update their build system... after
all, imake and xmkmf were deprecated in 2005!
