Yes, sorry, I meant the .la files.

If they were edited to just use major versions they might work...

...or removing them works too, as long as the .pc files still refer to
the right stuff.

Removing or editing to use major-library-version-number would fix it,
but in the end, if they're not "supported" it is proper that they be
removed.
Of course, who knows how many things expect modern X11 to have libtool
archive files and make assumptions, but if they do, that's their
problem. 99% of them are probably using pkg-config anyways.
