I'm certain this simple "self-configuration" did not work for me. My attempts to build pango always ended with a complaint that cairo was built without quartz support, and pango wouldn't build. So I'd rebuild my own cairo from source, and then pango, and all would be well. Just out of curiosity, maybe I'll try again now, for old time's sake.
