Hello Jim

I just happened to see below someone's .signature) in posts to the
list---is this something new the list has added? Is the list adding
this for everyone? Why? VERY strange.

The mailing list software in use (in this case Mailman [1]) seems to have some features, which can add stuff to each message. This can even be customized to the recipient (this is why it is your e-mail address), as seen on this mailing list. In the text you have the direct URL to your account login to manage your subscription to this mailing list. The text "This e-mail is sent to email@hidden" is helpful, if you are using several e-mail accounts and have setup forwarding to other accounts. So you can see with which address you are subscribed to this mailing list. It is a little bit redundant, as it is also visible in the customized configuration URL.

But it is a good idea, that this is below any existing signature, as proper e-mail client does not quote the signature and below when replying. But it would be even better, if it also would have the single line '-- ' (two dash and one blank, the same which is used to start a proper signature) at the beginning of this addition, so it will also be automatically removed when quoting on e-mails where people do not add a signature (like I do). Eventually this is something the mailing list admin can change, e.g. with replacing the line ' _______________________________________________' with just '-- '.

The same identical footer (expect the mailing list URL) is also on other mailing lists from Apple, seems to be a global configuration there. I have it on e-mails from Apple Mailman mailing lists which are dating back to October 2004. Other projects which are using Mailman as their mailing list software also use such footer, but this depends what the list admin or manager has setup.

bye
Fabian
