Hello Jeremy

So it seems with OS X 10.8 and XQuartz 2.7.2, if something
needs to be pasted from X11 to OS X, pressing Command-c is
needed.

That has always been the case. There is a special option for
"Update Pasteboard immediately when text is selected" but it
is disabled by default.

I just checked, on my 10.6.8 system (with system X11.app), this option is not set, and it is working without delay. On 10.8 I did just activate this option, and copy from X11 to OS X is now working without the use of Command-c in XQuartz.

As I usually use Command-c for this anyway, I would not have
realized this difference without the tests I did earlier on
10.6.8 with system X11.app.

While testing, I did just realize something else, which is very useful. Selecting text in one Terminal.app window and then doing a middle mouse click in an other Terminal.app window is working, like it is between xterm windows. But this is only between Terminal.app windows, it even does not overwrite what is in the pasteboard. This is something which I have missed (and almost have forgotten about) since I have switch from xterm to Terminal.app many years ago. This is one plus to migrate to 10.8. :-) It does not work between different windows in Terminal.app on 10.6, so I am quite used to Command-c and Command-v anyway. On 10.6 it does only work in the same window, but only with selecting and immediately pasting, without typing anything in between. This behavior is still the same in Terminal.app on 10.8.

Perhaps I can try to *downgrade* back to 2.7.1 and see if that
 reactivates copy-and-paste...

Did you do the log out and log in after the installation of 2.7.2?

That would have no effect on this issue. You only need to
logout on the first install (and with 2.7.2, you will be
notified to do so by the installer).

Oh, did not know that, I did it after the first install on 10.8, as the installer had told me, and as it was mention in this thread again. But good to know, that this is only needed once.

bye
Fabian
