Mailman itself is quite good with handling bounces and can

I administer several mailman mailing lists myself, and
sometimes it is simply impossible to figure out where a
message was sent to because a forwarding server does not add
any headers from which that can be deduced (and/or rewrite the
Sender header).
There are broken mails servers out in this world, one prominent
example is Mircosoft Exchange. On error it does always reply to
the address in the from or reply-to header line and not the
envelope from (where it should). For some known error messages
Mailman is even great and does not send such messages to the
mailing lists.
The other thing is (which you are probably experiencing), when
clueless users are using forwards and then decide, that they do
not want to receive this mailing list any more and then manually
request to be removed. They then probably also do not remember,
that they have subscribe with an other e-mail address. Sure, for
this case it is useful, if they forward the whole message and
their subscribed e-mail address is visible.
