OK, so let me rephrase - what makes you think that you're running a
true / clean Xcode 1.1 at this time (without bits and pieces from Xcode
1.2 thrown into the mix)?
I wouldn't be so sure about that - but I guess it depends on *how* the
install failed.
I also don't claim to know enough about the Xcode installer to really
talk about this in depth, but I would be surprised if the installer
didn't just start to write files to their final destination right away.

I'm just saying that I don't think that the reason you provided for
skipping the uninstaller step is that good. Note that I'm not saying
that it's required to run the uninstaller when upgrading - it's only
really required to run this script if you're downgrading.

My personal reason for always running the uninstaller is that when I'm
done, I want to _know_ that the stuff that I have installed is as close
as possible the same thing as what the Xcode team intended to install
for that particular release. That way I can be reasonably sure that the
software that I run is what has been through the QA for that release,
and that the bugs I file are "real", and not artefacts of a bad
install.
