I think the folks designing Xcode should take a long, hard look at the

windows needed to get anything done.

I feel the need to chime in here.

I'm usually editing some code - one editor.
Then I'm building and get some errors - second editor.
I either have to change to the second editor to fix those errors or I have to look them up in my main editor.
When the compiler is satisfied, I start a debugging session - and get my third editor window.

People - what's the _point_ of all those additional editors? It doesn't make anything easier for me. It's just confusing and a lot more work, since I need to deal with three windows now instead with just one.

I want to have ONE main editor. In case I need some file in a separate editor, I know how to open one myself, thanks.

Exactly my opinion.

Honestly, the first time that I saw this behavior in 1.5 beta, it was completely impossible for me to believe that this change was introduced on purpose. I thought its just an obvious glitch in the UI which would be naturally fixed before final, thus no need to file a bug.

There is another UI mis-feature that I have seen in 1.5 beta where I would be thankful if someone could tell me if its still there, because I don't want to download 400MB just to find out that the 1.5 final UI is just as broken in this regard (I work in single window mode):

1) I have a file "foo.c" open in the main editor
2) I close it by hitting cmd-shift-w (the file name is still selected in the Groups & Files pane)
3) I want to open the group "bar" in the Files & Groups pane
4) As soon as I hit the triangle to open the group, the file "foo.c" is re-opened in the main editor

This is an extremely annoying feature that makes me literally angry, because files which I closed just 5 seconds ago suddenly re-appear when they shouldn't. A similar problem exists with executables and targets in the Files & Groups pane. Whenever I click on them, an unwanted pane appears at the top of my main editor - what its purpose is - I don't know and I don't care. It shouldn't be there because I never told Xcode to open a pane.

Oh well, judging from what I've read so far about the final release it looks like I'm going to spend many hours filing a few dozen serious bugs against the 1.5 UI...

Regards,

Dietmar Planitzer
