I get the same problem when project files are missing. In this case, I need to check the list of project files for any that are missing (the name will be in red), and fix their path.

In our situation, the cause of this is that files get added to the project with absolute referencing (when they should be relative); when the project gets checked out on another user's machine, and the files are incorrectly referenced, XCode hangs on initiation of build.
