In the "General" preference pane in Xcode there's an option to "Automatically clear log" before each build/run.
Actually that just clears out the run/debug text logs, not the errors & warnings messages.
It sounds like you should file a bug since we may not be dealing with messages from custom build steps properly.

The reply was: Behaves correctly, "The Errors and Warnings Smartgroup doesn't clear entries for a file until the file builds successfully. This lets you keep a "to do" list of things to fix that is not lost when you rebuild a single file."
The original poster above was seeing different behavior (when successfully re-building a file, the errors/warnings were not being removed even though the error or warning was fixed) that is actually a bug.
Given the general positive feedback we've gotten on the overall behavior (not clearing messages for a file until it builds successfully, I don't see the basic behavior changing.
