Xcode is so slow it drives me crazy

Firstly, I should say that I'm using OS 10.3.

I have a 36,000 line C++ source file I'm trying to port to the Mac. OK yes I know that is excessively long, but it can't be helped as I'm not the one who wrote it.

So, when using Xcode, I find I must wait for 30 seconds or longer, just to open the file. And then every time I change a letter or line, I must wait 10 more seconds. If I click on another file, that one opens up, and then I try to edit the 36,000 line file again, and now I must wait another 30 seconds.

So something that I could have got done in 5 seconds, now might take me 5 minutes. All because of Apple's great app design.

This totally kills my flow. It makes me want to scream. Really. I can't get any work done like this! This might seem like a minor inconvience to some, but when your work is slowed down by 10x or so by your IDE, and your work means money... and your company's well-fare, well then it does make you want to scream.

I am used to CodeWarrior, where I can edit huge files instantly. It's all smooth and flowing.

Does this get better in 10.4?

Is there something I can do to make Xcode not slow? Must I buy a G5 to edit plain text files which are perfectly well editable by the oldest of computers that have good software?
