Perhaps if Apple supported an external editor API (similar to Codewarrior's), they could perhaps mitigate some of these problems with huge files with the help of some 3rd party editors.

This is already possible, have a look to the "File Types" preferences tab inside Xcode's Preferences.
Actually, in condensed mode it works fine, but not in the "All-in- one" mode: on double-clicking the huge file, it will be opended in the external editor *and* be shown in Xcode's editor... anyway, applying an external editor is on per-extension-basis, not on per- size-basis, and I don't want all my .cpp files opened in an external browser.

As I recall, Codewarrior's external editor API allowed you to build the project and debug from the editor, to avoid constant switching back and forth.

I doubt you'll ever get a size-based choice, that seems very counter- intuitive. Most folks either want an external editor for a file type or not.

The ultimate solution is really to improve the performance of the built-in editor. I notice a lag on relatively small files, so I think everyone would benefit from these types of improvements.
