Thanks for the advice, but unluckily it did not work :(

I did a complete uninstall and removed all xcode preferences from my system. Then I repaired disk permissions, rebooted. After the reboot, I installed the 2.2.1 version. When I tried the freshly installed Xcode it started and the 'new user' interface appeared. So far so good it seemed. However, the moment I clicked on the next button Xcode froze and did not do anything at all.

So I had clean everything again and reinstall the 2.0 and redefine all my projects.

Does anyone know if it is still possible to download the 2.1 version? That one was working nicely for me, but I cannot find the disk image anymore :(

Switching from Xcode 2.1 to Xcode 2.2 is better to uninstal all the previous version of Xcode. To do that you can write in a terminal the command:
$ sudo perl /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl

I agree that this is the best thing to do before installing a new version of Xcode. It only takes a minute or two, and ensures that you start out with a clean slate. I wish that they added this script as an optional step in the regular installer.

After this you have to restart your system. Then you are ready to install the new version.

No - you can install the new version right away. IIRC you get a dialog telling you that you need to restart if you're going to install _older_ versions of the tools

Try this way to start again from scratch.
After the installation is complete, you have to repair your disk permission.

"Have to"? I couldn't agree with that either.
