But remember, most users would rather work around the bug than report it, because reporting it is more work in the short run.

If you haven't done it, don't judge.

Except that it doesn't matter, because it is still work.

For instance, I've had some issues getting the latest stable AdiumX source to compile. I could submit this as a bug, or dig around trying to fix it, or I could just use the latest unstable AdiumX sources, which do compile properly.

No matter how easy Adium made it to report a bug, it could not possibly be easier than this:

$ svn switch http://svn.adiumx.com/adium/trunk

Here's another example: VLC doesn't go fullscreen -- all the menu options and keyboard shortcuts for resizing the window disappear once I start it. If I tell it to open fullscreen before I start the movie, that works -- hey, a workaround!

I realize these are not Apple products, but I haven't really had any bugs with Apple stuff directly for awhile -- not that I can remember, anyway.

IMO, the main reason people work around bugs without reporting them is that in the vast majority of cases a fix -- assuming it even happens -- isn't going to come in time to save you from having to work around the bug anyway.

Yes, that's true of almost anything. It doesn't mean it's the fault of the bug reporting software. It DOES mean that you should put forth a good effort to make the reporting software as easy as possible.

In most cases I file bugs so other developers won't have to work around them in the future, and then I implement a workaround.

So do I, when I do bother to report a bug. So we don't really disagree, except on the point that you said it was irrelevant whether it's easier to report a bug through Radar than through the mailing list. I think it's very relevant, whether or not it's fixable. Maybe try to figure out why the public forum is easier?
