(even on laptops), I wouldn't be too obsessed about using a few of them to provide a really useful feature like tabs. The beauty of tabs, of course, is that they give you direct access to any file using that window, and the ability to see which files are using that window.
The argument for tabs stretches into the argument for "Full Screen" editing. Tabbed browsing often includes an option to view full screen. The real estate thing is not really an issue if you can press (F11 for instance) and see the file fill the screen. Or like photoshop used to have, press tab and all the annoying pallettes disappear.
I wonder if we will see the day when a code editor developer can write the code to display a code file in "Full Screen Mode" without succumbing to the temptation to "just slide this little toolbar across the top that you can't hide" or similar such agonizing mediocrity.
Hey mac guys, if you do a full screen, don't put anything but a gutter and an editor in that window ok? Because at the end of the day, vi on a semi-transparent terminal window is still far and away the most luxurious and comfortable experience a programmer can have. Wow, Xcode editor windows with transparency, I wonder how many reasons not to include that we can come up with? ;)
