This is getting completely off-topic, but I have to reply.
The thread was marked as "off-topic" from the start, you realize. :-)

2. When you double-click a zip file on the Desktop and an app
appears, does the zip file delete itself? No?
Personally, I wish it did.
To the user, a file is a document is an item is an object is a thing.
It's all just stuff you click on and then, um, stuff happens. When
Mom and Dad click on Word files, they don't vanish. They will not
assume nor expect the zip file next to the Word file to vanish
immediately.
Vanishing data is unsettling and potentially frustrating for users.
3. If you back up software you download, which isn't a bad idea
necessarily, an Internet-enabled disk image kicks a bucket of suck
all over your plans.
You can back up the app it contained, without any superfluous info.
And the method of compression is up to your backup application of
chose
Guy Who Doesn't Read Slashdot: "What is a backup application? Method
of compression? I don't know what you're telling me, but I just
wanted to burn the file I downloaded to CD."
4. I was going to put that on another computer, but I wanted to
look on this one first. Thanks for making me download that thing
again.
Again, there is no reason why you can not copy the app contained in
the disk image.
See above.
Additionally, let's say by some magical psychic ability, I know it's
going to delete itself like some Mission: Impossible dossier. Now,
EVERY TIME I go to use it on my backup, it's going to delete itself,
so I have to remember to back it up every time. BOOOOO.
It is exactly what was meant to be distributed
No, what was meant to be distributed was a portable package that the
user doesn't have to create himself. That's why Apple uses disk
images in the first place.
Let me reiterate: I have no stake in using internet enabled disk
images, and really someone who has should argue this topic instead.
I have a stake in avoiding problems and frustrations for our support
team and our customers. If you have customers and a support team, you
do, too.
And I will ask support if anyone has ever complained about internet
enabled distribution. If people did, i will change it
People get frustrated, annoyed, and otherwise affected by things all
the time without complaining. Just because no one's complaining
doesn't mean it doesn't suck.
