It is best to not upgrade until you know more about how well it will
perform on a system you have for what you use it for (of course that
is not always easy to know before trying it, one reason I keep
external drives around with alternate OS installs).
Also your system isn't obsolete since you can upgrade the RAM in it.
In general if you plan to do any type of development work I would have
at least 1 GiB in the system (2 GiB or greater is highly recommended).
The tool chain, debugger, and sampling tools (Shark, etc.) need RAM to
do what they do in addition to anything your software does.
~$30 for 1 GiB total RAM
~$50 for 2 GiB total RAM
