I had this problem and I solved it by doing a full restore with 2.1 and iTunes 8. That combo, with a restore, has completely fixed this issue.

Someone told me it had something to do with the keychain and a bug. I don't know if that's correct but it's gone now.

I have the same problem every time iTunes tries to update an existing application. Yes, EVERY time. At least with 2.1, it fails gracefully instead of completely borking my iPhone.

Anyway, try removing the existing copy from your iPhone before installing the newer version. I haven't done any development with the iPhone (yet), but this has helped with iTunes applications.

I did a full restore, and now things seem fine. I suspect that I aborted a load of this app recently and that left some garbage around that confused things. I couldn't remove it from the iPhone in the conventional way because it didn't appear to be there at all.

I think the hint about ejecting the iPhone from iTunes is good. The hint about erasing settings also is worth remembering. I'll try it if this happens again.

thanks to all,

David
