I reinstalled system software (10.4.11) on an older PPC mac, including the developer tools. But when I copy a project to this mac, it appears as a plain folder not an xcode project file, so I cant open it.

Did you try drag-and-drop?

Drag the project-that-appears-as-a-folder onto Xcode's icon in its Finder window. If Xcode hilites, indicating it will accept the object, then drop it onto Xcode.

If Xcode doesn't hilite, try launching Xcode first, then drag-and- drop the project-that-appears-as-a-folder onto Xcode's dock icon. Again, Xcode's dock icon should hilite to indicate it will accept the object.

Also, what type of project is the project-that-appears-as-a-folder? Is it pbproj, xcodeproj, or something else?

What was the last version of Xcode the project-that-appears-as-a- folder was saved under? What version of Xcode did you install on the PPC?

If the project appears as a plain folder, what is its contents? 'ls - lar /path/to/proj' would be better than a manual transcription. Maybe you're missing some crucial file that Xcode needs to recognize it as a project, and without knowing what you have now, no one can say what might be missing.
