I'd guess that your battery is defective.

This has happened with 3 MacBook Pro batteries of mine and 1 MacBook battery
of my wife's, representing a 100% failure rate in our household.

In every case the battery was replaced free of charge by my local Apple
dealer.

Really? How old were the MacBook/Pros in question? I was told that even though I had the extended 3-year AppleCare for my MacBook, its battery was only covered for 1 year.

I have a MBP that was 2 years into the extended 3-year AppleCare warranty when one of my batteries would no longer charge after only 23 charge cycles (I carry around 3 batteries so that when I'm at a conference, I don't have to fight with everybody for the table closest to the power outlets and I've found that 3 batteries with good to excellent charge capacities just about guarantees me a full 20 hour day with normal usage--I also carry along a double-charger so I can charge all 3 batteries overnight when I get back to the hotel). AppleCare replaced it on a one-for-one exchange basis without quibbling (they overnighted me a new battery which I replaced in the box with the defective battery, sealed it, ripped off the old label to expose the return label underneath and promptly gave it back to the delivery guy more or less on the spot). Hope this helps.
