You're missing that xcodebuild was 32-bit only before Xcode 3.2.
The real question is: what are you hoping to accomplish by forcing
xcodebuild to run with one architecture over the other?
But, the release notes for Xcode 3.0 & 3.1 state:
The xcodebuild tool never runs with garbage collection. It can
be run in
64-bit mode on 64-bit hardware with the command arch -ppc64
xcodebuild
or arch -x86_64 xcodebuild
Why would the releases notes say this if it was not true (and it
doesn't
appear to be true)?
Because the release notes are apparently mistaken. :)
I've just done a fresh install of Xcode 3.1.4 on Leopard, and:
[ccox@ecox-macbook2:~]% lipo -info /Developer/usr/bin/xcodebuild
Architectures in the fat file: /Developer/usr/bin/xcodebuild are:
ppc7400 i386

Hoping for an easy way to get around the following build error:
GenerateDSYMFile /path/to/my.app.dSYM /path/to/my.app/Contents/
MacOS/my
***terminate called after throwing an instance of
'std::length_error'
*** what(): basic_string::resize
What leads you to believe that that is caused by running xcodebuild
32-bit?
The only thing I know is that it is one of just a small number of
differences between how the project is being built on 10.5.8 vs.
10.6.1 (it builds just fine under 10.6.1).
It would have been worth trying it out and was hoping something had
been missed and that there was a way to run a 64-bit version of
xcodebuild on 10.5.8.
Have you filed a bug?
No. It is not yet known what the problem is and, until this is the
case, it would be in appropriate to file a bug, imho.
