Jean-Denis,
Thanks for the clarifications...
What I meant about "if it does" was: if G S was correct in saying
that 4 allows independent windows and correct to imply that we
therefore have nothing to complain about, then that's an end of it,
and this thread can finally reach its longed-for conclusion.
However, your words suggest that G S was not considering certain
differences in window handling, which of course are the root cause of
this dissension.
I remain about as happy as I was previously, which is to say, fairly
happy, possibly as happy as can be expected.

I don't know; I'm just going by what I read on the list. From what I
understand, people are complaining that 4 uses the contained window
system, like Visual C++. That is, G S, the windows are "separate"
but must remain within the frame of the main window; they are not
independent - am I right?
Not quite, but that will do as a quick summary.
If so, that means one cannot just drag them around anywhere and
stack them or fan them as one might want. One cannot, for example
have them mingled on the desktop with windows from a separate
application.
It turns out that Xcode 4 sort of allows the tearing of its tabs to
stand alone windows. So it seemingly allows you to do what you
describe. However it falls far short, because of details (where the
devil is) that have been excruciatingly described on several occasions.
I assume there wouldn't be all this dispute if 4 handled windows the
way that 3 does.
This assumption is perfectly correct
If it does, that will end the old thread right now!
Not sure I get you. "if it does..." does what? handle windows the same
way as Xcode 3? No it doesn't.
If you can tell that to the list, please do and I'm many people will
be grateful to hear no more, and I'll be happy too. I mean, happier.
I can tell that to the list: "Xcode 4 doesn't handle windows the way
Xcode 3 does". We are not any happier.

What is the complaint? You can use separate windows in Xcode 4. The
option is there. What's the problem?
