To me it sounds like the issue is simply that you’re trying to build against the iPhone 2.1 SDK, which is not included with the iOS 4.3 SDK installation. You said you tried changing the build SDK to the latest iPhone OS, but did you change it at the project level or at the target level? Try changing it for the target and the project and see if it builds then.

Just looked at the readme, I'm pretty sure I followed those instructions, with the "custom install" directory being something called "oldXcode which I created".
It doesn't seem like there's anything special in that readme file.
