I tried several git client, free and commercial, and indeed, I use Tower the most.
However, Tower tries to expose as many git features as possible, which necessarily makes for a complex product.
So I need to mention GitBox which goes the other way: it tries to hide git as much as possible, making simplicity possible through cleverness. And it succeeds in a spectacular way for most, if not all, common use cases. In your case of severe aversion, I would suggest you try GitBox. It's commercial, but free to use for a single project.
For the sake of completeness, I should mention SourceTree that I had to use before Tower supported git-svn. SourceTree is very similar to Tower, and adds support for Mercurial, and is now free. SourceTree looks about as good as Tower, but I prefer the way Tower handles staging.
