Answering my own question for the benefit of people who might come across this thread later:
This is a known bug in iphonesim (I found it in the issue tracker in the github project.) You have to specify the path to the app as an *absolute* path. Once I did that, it works correctly.
The problem I have now is that Xcode’s unit-test template created a target that’s some sort of bundle that gets injected into the app, and I have no idea how to get that to happen in the simulator. I think I’m going to have to make a new target that’s essentially the app plus the unit tests linked into it, so the tests will run right at launch.
