Airplanes are for chumps.
Get back to me when you can install Xcode while hurling your guts due
to the violent swells that a passenger ferry in the iceberg-infested
waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence is only able to navigate because of
the experience, expertise and diligence of its crew.
While in principle it would be possible to equip such ferries with
WiFi, in practice Marine Atlantic is quite a low-budget operation.
At least at the time I was taking the crossings, one could not even
use a telephone aboard the ferries, let alone the Internet. This had
the hilarious result that someone just ahead of me in the lunch line
was completely unable to understand why she could not charge her meal
to her ATM card despite having no cash in her possession. No way for
a Point-of-Sale Terminal to talk to her bank, you see.
Most of Marine Atlantic's funding comes not from the fare charged to
its passengers, but from the Provinces of Newfoundland and Nova
Scotia, as well as the Canadian Federal Government, so as to
facilitate trade between the Canadian mainland and the rather distant,
incredibly isolated but *huge* and resource-rich island of
Newfoundland.
Many of the passengers and crew of the Titanic now rest for eternity
just off the coast of Newfoundland, with the exception of those whose
mortal remains washed ashore on the beaches of Nova Scotia.
I sailed to and from North Sydney, Cape Breton to Port-aux-Basques,
Newfoundland ferries a great many times, as my ex-wife is from a tiny
little fishing village in one of the very most remote and rural parts
of Newfoundland.
It was when I got the bright idea that I could take less time away
from my development work for my clients by purchasing an electrical
power inverter that I could plug into our car's cigarette lighter,
that I stumbled across The Very Most Effective Software Development

I'll send you my bill in the mail.
