The point of points as a type unit is that whatever item uses them will display at the same size no matter what the resolution, DPI/PPI of the device is. 12 point type is supposed to be the same height in inches in print, on a cell phone, on an iPad, on a TV, laser etched in to granite.

Yes Steve, that is what Alex is saying and that IS what resolution independence ought to be giving us because that IS what the naiive user expects when you offer him/her "higher resolution". Higher resolution translates to finer pixels, crisper edges and fewer artifacts in images. It *should not* equate with tinier renderings of standardized measures. "Point" is such a standardized measure, and equates to approx. 1/72nd of an inch. Regardless of the surface it is rendered upon - paper, screen or celluloid.
The original reply to this thread was so vehement that this is an ignorant set of beliefs as to be offensive. This is - without question - the broad-spectrum user expectation. And we as programmers are nonetheless still users.
The fact that we have all become more or less inured to the shrinking size of typefaces is merely testament to the lack of industrial understanding of the impact of these advances upon mere mortals.
