Thanks Marc, but git is not installed. I did a clean install of 10.8 when transitioning from 10.6.8.

Git is preinstalled in 10.8:

$  which git
/usr/bin/git
$ git --version
git version 1.7.12.4 (Apple Git-37)

Point is though, I want to turn it off for now and need to know where this setting can be changed.

I think Xcode’s snapshot feature is based on Git, so there wouldn’t be any point in turning it off.

Have you tried entering commands based on the command lines in the error message? It seems the error message is very clear about what you need to do to correct it.
