Not true. Of course they can open it. But I don't know what the situation is
with regard to line endings: Word's own documents, both on PC and Mac. use a
straight carriage return (ASCII 13) just like Mac text files. If you had
made the RTF with TextEdit on Mac OS X, it would have LF linefeed endings
(ASCII 10). I would think Word could handle those easily, however, since it
can open ,txt files no matter what the line endings. But if you have Word
5.1 you probably don't have OS X, you're more likely to have OS 7, I guess
(same vintage).

It doesn't have to be scriptable. In any case, Word's AppleScripting doesn't
work unless you use 'do Visual Basic' with VBA. I don't know if that works
with 5.1. It does with Word 6 and later, for certain.

That's silly. RTF is second nature to Word and doesn't need translation. And
I sure wouldn't trust what the Finder, of all things, calls the file.
