Yep--logout (and reboot) fixed the problem.

Just out of curiosity, was the reboot really needed?

It moved seamlessly to picking up the Scripting Additions in the System Library, which is what I hoped it would do in the first place (I wouldn't have had this problem on my XP box

The problem was here how scripting additions are loaded; if at least one running application had the Satimage osaxen still loaded, the corresponding files were still in use too (someone more knowledgeable than I am will sure provide more accurate details).
Not sure that this precise problem has an equivalent on XP.

--one of the few things I really miss is the way the clipboard does cut-and-paste with files; on the Mac the context menu doesn't seem to contain 'move this item', or 'cut to clipboard', so I tend to copy-and-trash.

A command-drag could be the shortcut you are looking for.
