This same folder menu in DragThing, Script menu or Tiger's Dock is
simply impossible to use.
Yeah, well, matter of opinion Luther. I used to use the feature in
Tiger to keep a very handy, navigable WIP folder in my Dock and I
can't do that any more in Leopard. FWIW, I wrote that usage as a tip
into a local newspaper and won a prize for it!
There are situations where following folder aliases into sub-folder is
a good thing and other situations where it's a very bad thing. (The
Script menu follows folder aliases and becomes completely unusable if
you install an alias to a large folder in Script menu.) This situation
suggests that folder menus in the Dock should have a property that
lets you turn this feature on/off. Perhaps a choice under "Display
as". (New feature #1)
But there's another problem with folder menus in the Dock: They are
not "real" menus. In my application, I had to write alias files to the
menu folder whose names began with 1 to 3 spaces in order to get the
order of items in the menu to look reasonable.
My first idea for a solution to this is to propose a "menu object",
perhaps a property list file with a .menu extension. Perhaps this is
workable, but it sounds too complicated to me.
A second idea ... The Docks "Sort by" options are: Name, Date Added,
Date Modified, Date Created and Kind. Add to this list: Comment. Items
with the same Comment default to Name. When my script writes the
contents to the menu folder, their comment will be written so that the
order is exactly what I want. No silly games with item names. And a
very simple new feature. (#2)
