Unusable in what way, exactly?
Folder aliases are very useful for building a hierarchy from multiple
sources without copying files around, especially if you want an item
to show up in more than one category. I would hate to not have aliases
produce sub-menus everywhere.
If there's a usability problem or a performance problem those should
be fixed, not worked around.
