As the Moose would say: When you assume, you make an ASS of U and ME ;-)
Seriously,
if all you have to go on for your 10.2 theory is that 50% don't
show up on your upgrade check statistics, I'd suggest you don't
expend the effort of back-porting. Such wild guesses usually just
cost time and man-hours. Have you tried doing a poll of your readers?
Have you checked your web site's referrer logs and user agent strings
and correlated them with your download statistics? Have you verified
whether your list of downloads is just started downloads or whether
everyone actually received a full copy of the file?
Depending on what your app does, it may just be that it's the kind
of app people like to download and test, or it may be that the
description of what it does on your web site is misleading and people
think it's something else, then realise their mistake when they see
the icon or the readme. Or if it's an app typically used on laptops
or is somehow preferentially used by people to do work (or
troubleshoot) when their 'net is down, that could be a reason for
these statistics, too.
Maybe your system requirements aren't clear, maybe your web hoster
is flakey, or maybe your typical user is in a large company that has
a very restrictive firewall. Make some polls, determine typical "use
cases" of your app. Don't just go and guess.
Cheers,
