This has been a constant battle for us to find some kind of simple way to
prepare our files for newsprint. US Web Uncoated V2 is a good starting
place, but you still have to adjust the file to get the ink limits right.
We profiled our primary paper's presses, and that gives us a good source
profile to use in our RIP, but using it for separations is somewhat scary.
Lately we've been using the Convert to CMYK using the "Custom CMYK" setup.
There are several presets, one in fact is SWOP (Newsprint). You then key in
your ink limits and black generation settings (which you hopefully can get
from your printer) and let it RIP (no pun intended). What's also nice is
you can leave your eyedropper tool on your image and see what effect the
different TAC and K generation settings have on the file. For instance, to
get a TAC of 240 with 80K I often plug in a total ink of 250 with 90 max K.
I have a few newsprint profiles I can send you (contact me off-list) to
experiment with, but using the custom CMYK has been working pretty well so
far. The file might still require a slight contrast bump, but it works
pretty well. Hope this helps!
PS - Last time I checked with Steve at Chromix there were not any newsprint
profiles to speak of.
